About Projectors
Buying a projector can be a daunting task with so many things to consider like: how bright does it need to be, how far away does it need to be from the screen, how do I connect my device to it, and all the while keeping within a budget - this is why we have trained advisers ready to chat or call us on 01256 882629.
Brightness is often misunderstood. Many people assume that the brighter a projector is, the better the image will be — but that’s not always true. Yes, in brightly lit environments like churches, school halls, and exhibition spaces, a higher lumen rating is essential to cut through ambient light and ensure the picture remains clear and vibrant. However, in darker settings — especially in home cinemas where you can control the lighting — excessive brightness can actually hurt the viewing experience. Too much light output in a dark room can flatten contrast and wash out colour depth, making films look less cinematic and more clinical. For the richest colour fidelity and shadow detail, you’re often better off with a moderately bright projector paired with a dark, controlled space. So, it’s not about going as bright as possible — it’s about choosing the right brightness for your environment.
Resolution plays a massive role in overall image quality, especially when you're watching content up close or projecting onto a large screen. For home cinema setups, 1080p is generally considered the minimum standard for a satisfying HD experience. That said, if you’re setting up a dedicated movie room or want the absolute best in detail, clarity, and future-proofing, Ultra HD or True 4K is the way to go. You’ll see more texture in skin tones, finer detail in shadows, and text will appear sharper across the board. In environments where image detail isn’t the priority — such as classrooms, training spaces, or basic business use — WXGA resolution may still be perfectly acceptable, particularly for simple PowerPoints or text-heavy presentations. But when visual impact matters, always go for the highest resolution your space and budget can support.
Throw ratio is one of the most overlooked yet crucial elements when choosing a projector. It defines how far the projector needs to be from the screen to produce a certain image size. A smaller throw ratio means the projector can sit closer to the screen — perfect for tight spaces or rooms where rear wall mounting isn't an option. Ultra-short throw models, for instance, can produce a 100-inch image from just a few inches away. However, throw ratio isn’t one-size-fits-all — it also depends on your desired screen size, room depth, and how much flexibility you have in mounting or placement. If you're unsure whether your space will accommodate the projector you have in mind, we strongly recommend reaching out to us. We can run a few quick calculations based on your room dimensions and recommend the best model with the throw ratio that works for you.
Connectivity -When buying a projector, it’s important to understand the types of connections you'll need. Most users should look for HDMI ports for modern media players, USB-C or DisplayPort for laptops, and even legacy options like VGA if you’re working with older hardware. Audio out ports are essential if you plan to route sound through external speakers, and wireless casting technologies like Miracast or AirPlay are incredibly useful for seamless screen sharing. For gamers, HDMI 2.1 support is a big plus for low latency and higher refresh rates, while business users often benefit from wireless presentation options that allow fast, cable-free content delivery. It’s also worth checking compatibility with streaming sticks, games consoles, laptops, or surround sound systems to ensure smooth setup across all your devices.
Built-in Sound vs. External Audio -Some projectors come with built-in speakers, but don’t expect cinema-level sound. While these are fine for occasional use or casual viewing, they often lack bass, depth, or volume. If you're serious about immersive audio—especially for home theatre or event use—consider pairing your projector with a soundbar, Bluetooth speaker, or even a dedicated surround sound system to match the visual quality with audio performance.
Keystone Correction, Lens Shift & Mounting Options- Image alignment is another factor often overlooked. Keystone correction allows you to digitally square off an angled image, which is useful if the projector isn’t positioned head-on, but optical lens shift is the superior solution for maintaining image clarity and geometry. Depending on your setup, you’ll also want to know if the projector can be ceiling-mounted, placed on a table, or even rear-mounted for hidden installs. Portable, fixed, or motorised options are all available, depending on your level of flexibility.
FAQ Projector buying questions
Do you know your room size and how much space you have to project?
Understanding your available space is crucial. Room dimensions directly impact which throw ratio you need and what screen size is achievable. If you’re in a small or shallow room, a short throw or ultra-short throw projector may be essential. In larger spaces, standard or long throw models will give you more flexibility. We can help you calculate this if you’re unsure.Have you thought about the ideal screen size for your space?
Screen size isn’t just about going big — it’s about balance. Too large, and your image may lose sharpness; too small, and the impact is lost. Consider how far your viewers will sit and how wide your wall or screen area is. A 100–120 inch screen is popular for home cinema, but business setups may benefit from more modest sizes for clarity and legibility.
Can you control the lighting in the room?
If you can darken the room with blinds or blackout curtains, you won’t need an ultra-bright projector — and you’ll enjoy richer colours and deeper contrast. But in rooms with lots of natural or overhead lighting (like classrooms or meeting rooms), you’ll want a projector with higher brightness, typically 3,000 lumens or more.
What devices will you be connecting to the projector?
Knowing what you’ll connect—laptop, gaming console, streaming stick, mobile device—helps determine what inputs and features you’ll need. HDMI is a must for modern setups, while USB-C or wireless casting may be preferred for minimalist installs. Don’t forget audio outputs if you're planning to connect a sound system.
Will the projector be used for movies, work, teaching, gaming, or events?
Your use case matters. Movie lovers will want high resolution and great contrast. Professionals need reliable brightness and sharp text. Educators benefit from ease of use and durability. Gamers require low input lag and fast refresh rates. Event organisers will need high brightness and flexible lens options.
Do you want fixed installation or portability?
If your projector will stay in one place, ceiling or shelf-mounted models with lens shift and keystone correction are ideal. For shared spaces, mobile setups, or outdoor use, consider lightweight projectors with carry handles, fast keystone adjustments, and auto-focus features.
What’s your maintenance expectation and long-term budget?
Traditional lamp projectors cost less up front but require bulb replacements. Laser and LED models last far longer—up to 30,000 hours—and need little to no maintenance. They also use less power and turn on instantly, which is great for both convenience and the environment.
