Dialling In Your Dream Golf Simulator: Why the Projector Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think
So, you’ve finally decided to build that golf simulator you've been daydreaming about during long Zoom meetings. You've got the launch monitor sorted, the netting picked out, maybe even a putting mat, but now you're staring at 50 different projector models wondering, “Do I really need to care this much?”
Yes. Yes, you do. Let’s talk about it.
It’s Not Just a Projector - It’s Half the Experience
Here’s the thing: your projector isn't just throwing some numbers on a screen. It's your golf course. It’s Pebble Beach, Augusta, and St Andrews right there in your garage. If the image looks washed out, blurry, or awkwardly cropped, your immersive golf experience suddenly feels like you’re playing on a 2005 Wii.
First: Know Your Room Dimensions
Before you add anything to your cart, measure your space like your golf game depends on it:
- Room length affects how far the projector can sit back.
- Ceiling height determines whether a ceiling mount is even an option.
- Screen size helps decide how much brightness you’ll need and also affects how far back the projector needs to go. Also bear in mind the shape of the image, most HD & 4K projectors are natively 16:9, but most can adapt to 4:3 for extra height and a handful can even do a perfectly square picture.
Throw Ratio: The MVP Metric
This one’s often overlooked, but it’s crucial. The throw ratio tells you how wide your image will be based on how far the projector is from the screen.
Most golf sims need a short throw projector. Here’s a quick rule of thumb:
- Short throw (0.4-1.0:1): Great for mounting just a few feet away and the most commonly used for golf sims - click here to view some short throw golf sim projectors.
- Standard throw (>1.0:1): Usually too far back for most golf setups but with some horizontal keystone adjustment can be placed to the side and avoid shadowing - click here to view some standard throw golf sim projectors.
- Ultra short throw projectors (<0.4:1) also exist but generally are not used in golf simulator setups because they are in the firing line of the ball!
Brightness & Resolution
You should be looking out for:
- Over 3000 lumens if your space isn’t pitch black - click here for the brighter options for your golf sim.
- 1080p minimum resolution, though 4K is nice if you’re going high-end and maybe doubling it up as a home cinema. Click here for the 1080p options or click here for the 4K options.
- Good contrast ratio so the greens and fairways don’t all blur together - some projectors such as the BenQ AH700ST, BenQ AK700ST and the BenQ LK954ST even have a dedicated 'Golf Sim' mode for enhanced greens and blues!
Bonus: Keystone, Lens Shift & Lag
- Keystone correction helps if your projector isn't perfectly centred, vertical keystone is perfect if you have the benefit of a high ceiling to keep the projector out of the way of your swing, and horizontal keystone is perfect for placing the projector off-centre.
- Lens shift gives you the same benefits of keystone correction with the added bonus of not having to digitally alter the image.
- Low input lag matters if your simulator software syncs real-time swing data to visuals - click here for the options with input lag of under 20ms.
TL;DR
If you’re building a golf simulator, your projector is just as important as your launch monitor. Treat it like the core part of the experience that it is. Know your space, prioritise throw ratio, and don’t undershoot on brightness.
